Isabel Madureira Andrade

Biography

Açores, 1991

Lives and works in Lisbon.
Isabel Madureira Andrade studied Painting at the Fine Arts Faculty, University of Lisbon. Master of Arts Thesis, Lisbon, 2018, Fine Arts Faculty, University of Lisbon.
Her first exhibition at the Fonseca Macedo Gallery was in January 2019, "Cosmografias, a História e Outras Cores" - group show - curated by Luísa Cardoso.
Isabel Madureira Andrade was short listed for the EDP New Artists Prize, 2019, and was distinguished by the International Jury with a Honorable Mention.
Isabel begins with the transposition of objects – ready made – using the “frottage” technique, showing their geometrical structure, many times organized as a repetitive pattern. It creates a visual rhythm, which resembles a representation of the cosmos.
Either on paper or on canvas, her transpositions of daily life objects become cosmographies, “systems of self-organizing of Nature”.
In Isabel´s earlier output, expression resulting from the process — from carrying out the work — is relatively restrained and the focus is on the evenly-shaped matrix with its regular lines, this time around, the matrix is made by herself, it is her own drawing.  Gesture and movement of the body gained full expression, and because of it the lines of the underlying matrix pulsate in a new way.
Also, and for the first time, the artist used a wider colour palette — even if it still consists of a limited choice of pastels, by and large earth and sea tones — then exploring the depths of colour — one more element bringing new trepidation to the canvas and to the phenomenon of an image appearing.
Isabel´s work is developed in series of individual canvases or papers with different colours and patterns, and in two instances, the visual composition is upset by the check pattern of the chosen canvas, because that pattern establishes a rhythm.
In January 2020, Isabel Madureira Andrade was invited to exhibit at the Arpad Szenes-Vieira da Silva Museum, “Epigramas”. A catalogue was published for the occasion.
In 2021, at the art fair Drawing Room Lisbon, Isabel Madureira Andrade was distinguished with the Millennium bcp Foundation Acquisition Award – Emergente Talent.
