Pedro Cabrita Reis

Biography

Lisboa, 1956

Cabrita was born in 1956 in Lisbon, the city where he currently lives and works. His unique philosophical and poetical approach to issues related to space and memory has received stead international attention as early as the mid-1980s, first in sculpture and subsequently in a variety of other media: painting, photography, drawing and installation.

By assembling industrial and simple materials, found and manufactured objects and submitting them to constructive processes, Pedro Cabrita Reis recycles almost anonymous reminiscences of primordial gestures and actions repeated in everyday life. Underpinned by anthropological reflection contrary to reductive sociological narratives, Cabrita’s theoretically and formally diverse work gains a suggestive power of association which, going far beyond the visual, reaches a metaphorical dimension. In fact, it is upon silence and enquiry that the work of Cabrita Reis is built.

Pedro Cabrita Reis participated in important international exhibitions, such as Documenta IX and XIV in Kassel, in 1992 and 2017, respectively; the 21st and 24th São Paulo Biennal, in 1994 and 1998; the Venice Biennale, where he represented Portugal in 1995 (together with José Pedro Croft and Rui Chafes) and 2013 and was part of the 1997 Aperto exhibition; and the Xème Biennale de Lyon, The Spectacle of the Everyday, Lyon, in 2009.
