Synopsis
The collection is a journey
In its “1st Movement,” in 2024, the Glimpse Collection presented its itinerary, so to
speak, the path to follow, at first glance, through a selection of Portuguese artists from
different generations, both from the islands and the mainland. The varied and diverse
media, techniques, and formats of the works in the collection immediately revealed a
broad approach, as well as a taste for and interest in contemporary art without stylistic
deviations.
The exhibition left the subsequent developments open, as if we were awaiting a new
movement, and in the exhibition catalog, I wrote the following passage: “the pleasure
of collecting and promoting private and institutional collecting on a broader scale, not
only in the Autonomous Region of the Azores, but also within the network of contacts
that the gallery has built through participation in contemporary art fairs.” Consequently,
these trips were intense, involving visits to studios, acquisitions, or exchanges with
international artists, which gradually broadened the collectors’ sphere of interest.
This exhibition features around 50 foreign artists representing a variety of practices and
trends, mapping out the spheres and geographies that shape the contemporary art that
marked the transition into the 21st century. Throughout this journey, it is interesting to
observe the choices and affinities between sculpture, drawing, photography,
printmaking, and painting. An “Untitled” photograph by Annie Guir, from 2001, an image
from this second movement, depicts the old Ribeira Quente fishing port on São Miguel,
establishing a closer connection with the place. The austerity of the references in the
photo transports us to a seaport, to a place in the world, like many of the places from
which the works in this collection originate. The journey continues…
